Thank you for your support!

Contemporary Canadian art is indeed alive and well, as we proved at the 20th Annual Art with Heart on Tuesday, October 8, 2013.

Bidders showed enormous enthusiasm for the contemporary art collection presented Tuesday night at the Carlu. Another sold out event in support of Casey House, the 20th Annual Art with Heart this year raised $760,000. This brings the total raised at Art with Heart events over 20 years to approximately $5.5 million for compassionate HIV health care at Casey House.

This year’s collection, carefully assembled by a top-notch volunteer curatorial committee, garnered praise and lots of buzz during the preview week at Waddington’s Auctioneers. The frenzied bidding on auction night was the proof of the pudding, with auctioneers Stephen Ranger and Perry Tung wielding the gavel as the collection generated a total of 33% above estimate.

Always a high point, inspired catering by Daniel et Daniel featured a wide-ranging menu: generous portions of braised pork belly with miso atop udon noodles, as well as duck confit cupcakes with roasted beet mash “icing.” Later, patrons seated at the auction were fortified with succulent whitefish tacos followed by sweet-and-salty caramel budino pudding topped with crunchy toffee morsels.

Throughout the evening, applause was raucous as prices doubled and even tripled that of estimated values. Guests were repeatedly brought to their feet in applause for bidders who made significant contributions to Casey House through particularly generous bids. Bids for works by Jesse Boles and Fred Herzog were matched by TD Bank Group and Rogers respectively, generating yet more funds for Casey House. A large scale work by celebrated photographer Edward Burtynsky from his newly-released WATER series garnered a $32,000 winning bid, the highest bid of the night. This was Burtynsky’s sixteenth contribution to the Art with Heart auction. A painting by James Lahey, another long-time supporter of Art with Heart who has contributed to every auction over the course of 20 years, raised another $22,000. Both these artists are represented by Nicholas Metivier Gallery, who continued their generous support of Casey House by stewarding five significant works into the collection this year.

Patrons who did not secure a winning bid Tuesday night were still able to depart with art tucked under their arms, having purchased one of the tongue-in-cheek Gallery of Patrons Limited Editions works by Douglas Coupland, sponsored by Urbacon. Others left with a June Callwood Artist’s Multiple by Jaime Angelopoulos. A few of these works remain available for a limited time by visiting .

A few Limited Editions by Douglas Coupland are still available.

Patrons mingled before the auction, with an opportunity to meet and speak with internationally-lauded architect Siamak Hariri of Hariri Pontarini Architects, who displayed a large-scale model and video fly-through of the planned new home for Casey House at the corner of Jarvis and Isabella Streets. The date for the next Art with Heart for Casey House will be announced in early 2014. Plan now for this must-attend event next October – you won’t want to miss this fun-filled celebration of Canadian contemporary art and compassion!
