Our Approach to Care
Our caregivers collaborate as an interprofessional team to provide compassionate supportive (sub-acute), palliative, and end of life care, which is client-centered, holistic and culturally sensitive. In addition to the exemplary health care we provide, complimentary therapies and recreation therapy are fundamental to supporting the health and well-being of the people we care for at Casey House.
Interprofessional Team
Casey House believes in care that addresses not only an individual's medical concerns, but every aspect of who they are and what they are experiencing. We hear time and again that it is the people who make Casey House so special. From the dedicated group of volunteers who founded the hospice in 1988, to today's health care professionals, including physicians, nurses, complementary therapy practitioners, social workers, volunteers, and most importantly our clients and their loved ones-- everyone is part of the team. This team reaches even further beyond the bricks and mortar of Casey House, as our many consultants and community partners make a real difference in providing care every day. By committing to our interprofessional collaborations, Casey House works to ensure minimal overlap and duplication, and maximum knowledge sharing and service delivery, among all care providers.
Complementary Therapy
Casey House employs complementary therapies as an adjunct to medication regimes and helps clients deal with issues like pain and symptom management and depression. The inclusion of these therapies offers clients their treatment of choice and enables them to augment their treatment with more than just drug therapies. The use of complementary therapies also speaks to the hospice philosophy embraced at Casey House and the holistic approach of addressing the needs of the body, mind and spirit. Most important of all, complementary therapy allows for the provision of comfort to clients in all phases of their care and contributes to enhancing their quality if life. Casey House has a registered massage therapist on staff who provides massage to our residential and community clients.
Other therapies used at Casey House include: Aromatherapy; Art Therapy (group or individual); Massage (relaxation and treatment); Therapeutic Touch; Yoga Breathing Exercises; Other (as identified by the client).
Recreation Therapy
Recreation therapy is an integral part of the services offered at Casey House, providing a range of leisure, recreational and wellness programs for both residential and community clients. Such programs as art therapy, exercise classes, craft activities, and special event outings foster a sense of well being among participants, and significantly contribute to the recovery and rehabilitation process. Recreation therapy improves physical and cognitive functioning and affords participants an opportunity for self-expression, self-efficacy and confidence, and perhaps most importantly an environment through which to develop friendships and social support networks.
