About Care at Casey House
Our mission:Casey House Hospice provides exemplary treatment, support and palliative care for people affected by HIV/AIDS, in collaboration with our communities.
We provide care through two programs: the Residential Program, and the Community Program.
The goals of all Casey House's programs and services are to:
- Help clients and their families to enhance their health and quality of life and maintain dignity at all stages of the HIV/AIDS process.
- Collaborate with clients to establish a mutually agreed upon plan of care.
- Link clients and their families with the most appropriate services to promote, maintain and support their quality of life.
Our caregivers collaborate in interprofessional teams to provide compassionate supportive (sub-acute), palliative, and end of life care, which is client-centered, holistic and culturally sensitive.
HIV/AIDS no longer means imminent end of life, but the disease is episodic and multi-faceted. Hence, the role of professionals and caregivers must shift to help clients to build control back into their lives. Needs-based, flexible, individualized care is adjusted according to the client's status as the disease progresses along a continuum. We deliver a wide range of services that clients help to identify-- from self-care counselling and social visiting, to medical intervention and rehabilitation, to palliative care.
Casey House is a specialty hospital, with an approach to palliative care that reflects the hospice philosophy, through our comprehensive and compassionate programs for clients and their families. Such care seeks to maximize the individual's quality of life; the emphasis is on living rather than dying. We recognize that when cure is not possible, providing care and comfort can be just as significant a contribution. We realize the value of attending to the emotional, social and spiritual needs along with the physical health care requirements. We view each person as having unique hopes, fears, anger, expectations and desires. We recognize each person as having individual views of family and lifestyle. The person is valued as the central focus of our work, participating fully in choices and direction of care.
Our care may not be appropriate for everyone. Some health conditions may demand treatment or equipment not available in the Residential or Community Programs, and some persons may find the program unsuited to their personal needs. But for many, Casey House will offer a valuable option.
